Chapter 17

Over the weekend, Barty slept in late and when he finally woke up he sleepily stumbled out of bed to go downstairs and eat breakfast.

On the way down he heard Uncle Peter. He had returned that morning and was talking with his mother about what happened to them on their last excursion.

Barty tiptoed down the stairs when his mother heard a step creak and realized he was listening to them. She called out his full name. “John Bartholomew Roberts, III! I know that’s you. Get down here. Now!” said Charlotte.

Barty’s uncle looked at him sympathetically. What could he say? Barty wasn’t his kid, just his nephew. He had to let things take their course.

Barty stiffened. He knew he was in trouble, so he slowly made his way downstairs.

Charlotte began questioning him. “What happened when you all went on this ‘adventure’ with your uncle the other night? And, come to think of it, why did you all come home early from the summer camp you begged me to let you attend again this year?”

Peter gave him a look that said, ‘don’t tell her everything because she’ll freak out.’

Barty started explaining what they learned. “Summer camp is really cool, but I have learned more from Uncle Peter than I did at camp.”

“Is that so?” asked Charlotte. “What exactly did you learn? Examples please.”

Barty faltered. Uncle Peter stepped up to the plate and began filling in the blanks, but Charlotte stopped him.

“Enough, Peter. I don’t want to hear some made-up B.S. from you. I want to hear it directly from my son’s mouth as to what he has been up to.”

Caitlyn saved the day. Barty looked up and there was his sister making her way down the staircase. He thought to himself, Saved by the sis once again.

She called out three new facts on her way down the stairs. “We learned advanced knot-tying, advanced research skills, and a bit about sword fighting and how pirates defended themselves,” said Caitlyn. She was actually speaking the truth, but it wasn’t exactly where they learned these new skills.

“Good morning, everyone. Is breakfast ready? I’m starving.”

Something about Caitlyn’s cheerful demeanor deterred Charlotte from pursuing the matter further. “I want you both to know this isn’t over.” Charlotte wagged her finger at Uncle Peter and Barty. Peter and Barty looked at each other and shrugged their shoulders.

Charlotte put her arm through Caitlyn’s and they walked arm-in-arm into the kitchen. Caitlyn gave a thumbs-up sign behind her mother’s back before heading into the kitchen. She also turned her head toward Uncle Peter and Barty to give them a wink and a nod.

Barty sighed in relief, and was extremely grateful, but their problems weren’t over yet. They needed to get back on the pirate ship and sail to Cartagena de Indias which was the next place Uncle Peter had told him they needed to go.

After breakfast, Uncle Peter entered Barty’s room where he was unpacking the backpack full of clothes he’d brought home while Caitlyn sat there watching.

“Your Mom says you two can come back with me, but we aren’t allowed to go on anymore ‘wild adventures.
